Sunrise Dreams Green
“We want to do our part to make the world a better place” says Sunrise COO Tina West. “This is precisely why we’ve started offering green assessments for any property owner who’s willing to invest an hour to lower their community’s carbon footprint.”
“We see it as a serious value-added proposition for any owner concerned about global warming.”
After 30 years as the industry’s progressive action leader, this response to the environmental crisis surprises no one.
“By emphasizing green practices at our communities, our residents know we’re helping them achieve their lifestyle goals. Each and every one can be confident that they’re being responsible consumers at every level – not just when they’re shopping.”
She continues; “We at Sunrise have shifted practices on many levels”, including:
Incorporating solar to include photovoltaic applications wherever
feasible
Installing energy efficient appliances and low-flush toilets upon
replacement
Utilizing motion sensors in public areas to minimize energy waste
Maximizing water conservation methods throughout every building
we manage through smart controllers, drip systems, and bubbler
heads in landscape irrigation systems.
Evidence of the company’s commitment can be seen at properties such as Scripps Terrace, with its:
Solar applications for heating pool
New energy efficient air conditioning units
Smart controls on landscaping
New front-load energy efficient washing machines
Fluorescent lighting throughout the property (inside and out in all
public areas)
“Furthermore” West says “We’ve initiated a conservation and prevention program, in which we’re working hand-in-hand with area conservation programs. Our objective is to have our communities benefit from the financial incentive programs being offered by the Water Authority, SDG&E and the rubbish removal companies.
As part of the Sunrise initiative, residents will also be involved in ways to “green” their apartments and practice low-impact living in an effort to minimize their own carbon footprint by:
Recycling and composting
Using compact fluorescent bulbs
Green housekeeping
Sunrise is also encouraging all of its residents and associates to take the 20 gallon water challenge (www.20gallonchallenge.com).
“We see our environmental commitment coming to fruition on three different levels” West continues “and that’s at the corporate, community and personal level. The extent of our involvement, in turn, encourages residents to get more involved in helping to improve the world around us.”
When added to the City of San Diego’s recycling mandate, which is guiding all multi-unit housing facilities into a more active recycling effort (and will be implemented at all Sunrise communities by yearend 2008), it’s immediately apparent how much of a positive impact Sunrise’s 9,000 units can potentially have on the local environment.
“Like any good corporate citizen, Sunrise Management wants to do all we can to make our world a better place.” says West. “because, like they say in the movies, ‘there’s no place like home.’”
